Does anyone remember a kids show from the 1970`s called 'Escape Into Night'?
It frightened the life out of me as a kid. I was only 8 at the time. It`s on YouTube

Signed and posted it on Facebook. Signed. I`m a huge fan of Mike Leigh. I have most of his stuff on DVD, For over 30+ years I have been a massive fan of 'kitchen sink' dramas of the 50`s, 60`s and 70`s.

Anyone remember "Armchair Thriller" back in the late 70s, possibly 1978? That used to scare the bejesus out of me, especially the one with the Nun with no face. I was too scared to sleep with the light off that night! Can't believe my parents let me watch that at 9 or 10 years of age. Even the music on the opening credits used to put the willies up me. OMG yes! I was a bit older than you but I still had bloody nightmares That was a scary bloomin' programme. I think parents were more open to letting their kids watch stuff in those days though. I remember in early days of comp (must have been 11-12) and the original Bouquet of Barbed Wire was on telly on a friday night choc-a-block of nudity, sex and even a dad who seemed to be lusting after his daughter (well that's how I remember it!) But nearly all us had watched it and couldn't wait to get back to school on the Monday morning to dissect it in detail My mum says she let me watch it thinking I might learn something (?) but nowadays it would be "get this filth off our screens, THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!" He was lusting after his daughter. Have it on dvd and it is quite obvious. The book makes it even more so. I also saw it when i was about 11 or 12 - channel 4 repeated it not long after it started in 82. Ch 4 repeated lots of great things that first few years. I'd also seen MacKenzie, another Andrea Newman when I was 9 or 10. Pretty young for I, Claudius as well. That's another regular rewatch. I remember rape coming up in Dallas when I was about 9 or 10 too. I think aside from it being a little more relaxed a time generally and pre horror stories about children performing copycat attacks (most of which are nonsense in my opinion) i think it had a lot to do with how we watched tv - which was generally as a family due to there usually only being one tele and no recording devices in the house. If the kids weren't able to watch, the adults couldn't either and the adults wanted to watch after a hard days work. Plus they figured that they could monitor the kids reactions, switch off needs be and also explain and talk about any 'issues' that came up. Generally i think it was a good policy, surely better to learn about upsetting things in the safety of home where parents can explain and comfort rather than getting false information in a playground or even worse having something horrible actually happen to you without recognising danger signs. Certainly nobody i know that was raised in the 70s and 80s in a similar way has grown up to be a degenerate rapist or killer. A lot of parents just don't seem to be willing to do any of the awkward or nasty sides of 'parenting' these days - they want tv and teachers to do it all for them. I'll get off my soapbox now.

But every single one of his films are a joy to watch aren`t they. He`s a true genius in my opinion. I can`t wait til "Mr Turner' comes out on DVD, as I`m a huge fan of Timothy Spall too.

I really struggle to pick a favourite Leigh film. I have never rated any as being perfect so it's really tough!
I have a real soft spot for High Hopes and Life Is Sweet for example but I'm not sure if I'd call them my favourites.
Of his Play For Today's though, my top 3 are Grown Ups, Abigail's Party and Nuts In May.
Mr Turner is a very impressive piece of work. The DVD is actually out now, here in the UK at least.

Yayyy Mr Turner is available May 5th on Netflix. Can`t Wait. Grown Up`s, Life Is Sweet, Secret`s & Lies, All Or Nothing, and Vera Drake are in my Top 5. I love that Ruth Sheen, Alison Steadman, Timothy Spall, Phillip Davis, Imelda Staunton, Eddie Marsan, are featured a lot in his plays and films. I`ve become a fan of their work too. It`s a shame he and Alison got divorced. I didn`t know they got divorced until a few months ago.
